Four steps, about a minute

Backrow isn't in the Chrome Web Store, so you add it in Developer mode. Everyone watching needs it, plus their own login for the streaming site.

  1. 1

    Download the zip

Grab backrow-extension.zip. It's small and has no trackers or remote code.

    Download zip
  2. 2

    Unzip it

Double-click the file. Keep the backrow-extension folder somewhere it won't get deleted, since Chrome loads it from there.

  3. 3

    Turn on Developer mode

Paste this into the address bar, then flip the Developer mode switch in the top right.

  4. 4

    Load unpacked

Click Load unpacked and pick the unzipped folder. Pin Backrow from the puzzle-piece menu so it's easy to reach.

Then

Open a show and press play. Click the Backrow icon, choose Start party and send the invite link. Friends who open it land on the same episode, at the same second.

02 · Your own video

Upload a file, no extension needed

The file is encrypted in this tab before any of it is sent, and it's deleted within a day. Friends watch in the browser on any device. MP4 (H.264) and WebM play everywhere. Up to 2 GB.

03 · Privacy

The server can't read your party

Every invite link ends in a secret key, the part after the #. Browsers never send that part to any server. Your messages, names and what you're watching are locked with it before they leave your browser, so Backrow's server only passes along scrambled data.

What the server can see
  • A random party id
  • How many people are connected
  • When messages are sent, and their size
  • Who is host, and whether only the host controls playback

Good to know

Is it actually free?

Yes. No accounts, ads or paid tier. It runs on Cloudflare's free plan, and the code is MIT licensed, so you can host your own copy.

Does everyone need a subscription?

For Netflix, Hulu and Peacock, yes. Each person streams from their own account, and Backrow only keeps the players in sync. YouTube and uploaded videos need no account.

Why isn't it in the Chrome Web Store?

Not yet. Loading it in Developer mode takes a minute and runs the same code you can read on GitHub.

Firefox or Safari?

The extension is Chromium-only for now. Uploaded videos play in any modern browser, phones included.

What happens to my upload?

Only encrypted chunks ever reach the server. The file is deleted once the party has been empty for a few hours, and within a day at most.

How tight is the sync?

Pauses and seeks reach everyone in well under a second. If someone drifts a little, Backrow speeds them up or slows them down slightly until they catch up, instead of jumping.
